Poker - The Gender Debate

It is the age-old argument that takes place in home games throughout the world. Who is better at poker; the man or the woman?

If you look at the sheer imbalance in the male to female numbers in the game, your first instinct would be to put your money on the man being the better poker player. But just because there are more men in the game than women does not make them better players.

What about results? Surely men have better results than their female counterparts – or do they?

Let’s take Vanessa Selbst, for example. Selbst has won over $5 million in live tournament earnings, and is currently ranked as one of the top ten live tournament players in the world.

Selbst has won two World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelets, a Partouche Main Event title and back-to-back North American Poker Tour (NAPT) titles in male dominated fields.

When it comes to female poker players, there are a few things that you should take notice of.

Firstly, a lot of female poker players seem to have a more passive style. Anyone who has played with Selbst can testify that this is not always the truth, but it is a good generalisation.

With this in mind, you will often see other players trying to isolate and bully female poker players, and you can use this piece of knowledge to your advantage as well.

So, who are the better poker players: men or women? We think it is probably better for you to decide.
