Boxing: Momentum Key for Barker against Sturm

Darren Barker (26-1, 16 KOs) will make the first defence of his IBF Middleweight title against Felix Sturm (38-3-2, 17 KOs) in Stuttgart, Germany on December 7th in a fight that has many in the boxing world disagreeing.

While fans who bet on boxing know that facing Sturm in Germany has not been a smart career move for many a fighter over the years due to controversial decisions awarded to the home fighter, Barker has the comfort of knowing this fight will have neutral judges.

In addition, the London fighter’s promoters have also included a rematch clause should Barker lose the bout, for a return clash in London next year.

Sturm’s long reign as WBA middleweight champion was brought to an end in September of 2009 by Daniel Geale, who then went on to lose his title to Barker in a thrilling fight in Atlantic City earlier this year.

After putting the Englishman on the canvas in the sixth round, Geale failed to take advantage of the knockdown, went on to lose a narrow split decision, and handed the belt to Barker.

After winning the belt, Barker was ordered to face his mandatory challenger in Sturm, and the 31-year old will be looking to make sure his time as a world champion isn’t a short one.

Barker has had to come through a lot of injuries to get to this point in his career, but the Londoner has been fully fit for a year and has built up some real momentum in that time.

While it can be argued that Sturm has been able to cherry-pick his opponents in recent years due to his significant backing from German television, Barker had to get through some testing fights to put himself into a position to successfully challenge Geale for his IBF strap.

Now, Barker will be determined to begin his reign with a victory against an established name in Sturm, but the German star will know a win against the Englishman would put him right back in the mix – and that’s why the betting is so close for this fight.
